Heir Force Novel: Kate and Spencer Enjoy Meatloaf

Previously on HFN: Kate Cooks and Spencer Installs

With the potatoes boiling along, Kate took out the salad fixings and a bowl and sliced the onion, romaine, mushrooms and tomato. She was looking forward to this meal and the leftovers she could have for lunch. She would also send some home with Spencer.

She peeked around the corner and saw Spencer sitting at her desk, pulling some cords up. She had forgotten to offer him something to drink, so went to remedy that. “Would you like something to drink?”

He stopped tugging for a second and turned toward her. “Please. Do you have any tea?”

“Sure. I’ll be right back.” She went back to the kitchen to get his tea and water for herself. Afterward, she went back to the kitchen and put the meatloaf in the oven. She would put in the bread the last five minutes of baking time. She took the salad to the dining table and took out dressings from the fridge. She wiped down the counters and washed all the prep dishes before setting the table. Each time she reentered the dining room, Spencer was doing something different. She sat at the table and asked, “How’s it going?”

“Good. I’m almost done, since Murphy didn’t show up today for a change.” He turned back to her and grinned.

“Fantastic. Dinner will be in about twenty minutes.”

“Smells fabulous. I feel like you’re getting the short end of the stick.”

“How so?”

“I do this stuff every day.”

“Well I cook almost every day. Or at least every week,” she confessed.

“You cook a whole lot more than I do. Lean Cuisine and pizza for one is the extent of my cooking, unless I grill.”

“Well, we’re even.”

“I suppose.”

Kate still wondered about their conversation in the car, but didn’t want to ruin the evening by bringing it up again. She thought it better to drop it and forget about it. They talked about how things were going in Afghanistan and Iraq and wondered how much longer they would be fighting. “We’re every country’s hero, but our own,” Spencer lamented.

“Yeah, the United States always seems to come to everybody’s rescue at the expense of young lives.” Kate hoped troops would be pulled out of Iraq soon so that John and she could be home and stay home. She only had another year and a half of her tour and she was ready to settle down in one spot. Depending on John’s plans, she hoped they could marry and finish his tour and choose a location they both agreed on. At least with the new technology Spencer installed they could keep in touch easier.

Kate watched Spencer a few minutes more and then he announced he was done.

“Great. I can refresh our drinks and we can eat.”

“Sounds good. I’ll wash up in the bathroom.”

Kate took out the bread and added it to the table. She brought a knife and spatula to serve up the hot dish and sat down. Spencer came in and said, “Smells better than what I would have had.”

“Good, let’s hope it tastes as good.” She slid the knife in the pan and cut a few pieces and served it.

“After we eat I’ll give you Skype 101 lessons. How’s that sound?”

“Great! I sure could use that. I’ll have to remember the time difference and send emails when the timing is wrong.”

Spencer nodded. “Yep, there’s always that. I need to email him myself.”

“What’s that?” Kate pointed to Spencer’s finger.

“A little scratch, looks like.” He licked the blood off his finger.

“Looks more than that,” Kate said. She got up and rummaged through her medicine cabinet in the hall bathroom. She came back with a first aid kit. “Here let me see,” she held out her hand.

“It’s nothing.”

“Nothing, my foot. Look how deep that is.” She poured iodine on a cotton ball and wiped it clean, then dabbed on a little antibacterial cream and covered it with a bandage. “Can’t have you getting an infection on my account.”

“Thank you nurse, Kate. I feel so much better already.”

“Very funny. Now eat your meatloaf before it gets cold.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He didn’t mind obeying her this time.

Kate shook her head and set the kit on the table and finished her own dinner. After Kate cleared the table, Spencer showed her how to use the Skype which wasn’t difficult at all. Then they called it a night.
