Kate’s phone rang while Spencer was on his way back to the bedroom so he returned to the kitchen and answered it. Mrs. Kern, John’s mom was on the line. “Hi, Mrs. Kern. It’s Spencer. How are you?”
“Doing ok, I guess. And you?”
Kate’s phone rang while Spencer was on his way back to the bedroom so he returned to the kitchen and answered it. Mrs. Kern, John’s mom was on the line. “Hi, Mrs. Kern. It’s Spencer. How are you?”
“Doing ok, I guess. And you?”
Now what? Spencer took out his cell phone from the holder on his belt and called his friend Andrew, the kind of guy that jumped at the opportunity to help anyone in need. A cool guy in Spencer’s book.
“Hey, are you busy? I need a favor.”
Spencer was surprised at Kate’s abrupt hang up and was more concerned than when he first called. He was already dressed and had eaten a bagel with juice purchased the night before along with Kate’s groceries. He slid his feet into his shoes, grabbed his keys and drove straight to the nearest store. Spencer picked up muffins, chicken noodle soup, and children’s Tylenol in case Kate didn’t have any on hand yet.
The next morning, Kate still felt tired. She walked out to the kitchen and saw bags of groceries on the counter. Bless that man, Kate thought. In addition to the bags, there were some lovely flowers in a pitcher. The sight didn’t surprise her as much as it should. She took a quick sniff before the phone rang.
Spencer left with the list in his hand and drove to the nearest grocery store. After noticing what little Kate had in her refrigerator, which was understandable after a trip, he added some things to the list. He was grateful Kate hadn’t dwelt on his earlier comment. He wished he could retract it, but it was too late now. He would really have to watch himself over the next few weeks. He pushed the cart toward the dairy and got the milk and eggs and turned toward the floral department. He added a small bouquet of daisies.
“Mommy? He my daddy?” Sarah pointed at Spencer standing in the kitchen with Kate.
Kate and Spencer quickly pulled apart and Spencer started to say, “Not yet–”
The rest of the trip went without incident and they pulled into Kate’s apartment complex about 8 o’clock. “Home, sweet, home.” Spencer turned the engine off and stretched.
“Finally. I can’t wait to see Buttons. I missed him.” Kate unlocked her seatbelt and twisted her neck back and forth. She glanced at Sarah, who had a glazed look.
As promised, here’s a short recap of Heir Force. We first meet John and Kate who are both active duty and dating each other. But John has a secret and gets killed overseas without telling Kate what it is. Spencer, a friend of both John and Kate, knows this secret and wished John had shared it with Kate prior to his death.
Wow, time flies when you’re sick, you get behind, it’s Christmas season and you forget how to write. Almost. I find it way too easy to not write when there’s been a long stretch. Which is disturbing as a writer. But, it’s time to get back to Heir Force!
