The next morning, Kate woke up stiff and sore. She was instantly worried about Sarah as soon as she realized she was in the hospital. But Spencer told her what happened and reassured her that Mrs. P had everything under control. After getting Kate’s cast in place, some prescriptions for pain, and discharge instructions, she was released.
Mrs. P and Sarah were having a great time, listening to Christmas carols and making a card for Kate. Then Mrs. P brought out the sugar cookies she made at home and the items needed to frost and decorate them. Sarah had fun eating as many decorations as those that made it on the cookies. Buttons made himself useful by eating the crumbs off the floor.
“I’m scared for her, what if something happens to me? She can’t lose any more parents!” Kate wiped away tears with her sleeve.
Spencer held her in his arms for a few minutes while she cried, wiping away her tears with his thumbs. Kate fell onto the bed, kicking off her shoes. Spencer pulled up a blanket, covered her and left the room.
When everyone had their fill from the Thanksgiving meal, and started clearing the table, Kate’s home phone rang, so she went to the kitchen to answer it.
Spencer said a blessing over the food, then it was mild chaos passing the dishes around.
“Hey, is that Cookie Monster on your bib?” Andrew asked Sarah.
Sarah shook her head, too afraid to speak. “Oh, I know who it is. It’s Oscar the Grouch.”
Again Sarah shook her head. “Elmo,” she whispered.
“Oh, that’s right. Elmo. I think he’s pretty cool.” He gave her a wink.
Sarah nodded, then looked at her mom and asked, “We eat now?”
They finished up their work and the doorbell rang. Kate went to the door. “Hi, Andrew, Matt, come on in.” They stepped in and commented the aromas were tantalizing. “Thanks, I’ll take your coats after you bring your goodies to the kitchen.”
“Look who’s here,” she said to Spencer.
The following weekend, Kate and Sarah and Spencer were invited to Mrs. P’s for dinner to celebrate Kate’s birthday. Sarah was ‘helping’ Mrs. P make her a cake. Kate was sure it would turn out delicious, despite the ‘help’ that her helper provided.
After her nap, Kate noticed her answering machine was blinking. She had a message from Mrs. Kern. Kate had a few minutes before her friends arrived, so she called her back.
They chatted for a minute about how they were doing, and then Mrs. Kern said, “We have to clean out John’s apartment and wanted to check with you to see if we could see Sarah while we’re in town.”
Now what? Spencer took out his cell phone from the holder on his belt and called his friend Andrew, the kind of guy that jumped at the opportunity to help anyone in need. A cool guy in Spencer’s book.
“Hey, are you busy? I need a favor.”
